SPART*A Issues Statement Commemorating Second Anniversary of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” Repeal
Washington, D.C., September 20, 2013 - Two years ago today, we marked a significant milestone in the march towards full LGBT military equality. The decades-old “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy had finally been repealed, ensuring no service members would be discharged because of their sexual orientation. We can serve openly, honestly, and without reproach for being who we are.
We have come a long way as a community, seeing Provision 3 of DOMA struck unconstitutional and the implementation of benefits for same-sex military couples. Today we stand on ground hallowed by our predecessors so that we may walk free and with our chins held high. Today we look to the horizon as the sun has risen on this second anniversary of the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Today we are no longer hiding in shadows, lingering among the darkness harboring us from groups who would do us harm. Now, we walk completely in the light, basking in the rays of equality shining down on us since September 20, 2011.
Today, this day, is our call to action to press even further until we are all equal, receiving every benefit we are entitled to, and every Sailor, Soldier, Airman, and Marine can stand with dignity and honor, the spirits of our predecessors at our backs, vanguards against hate and discrimination, and reminding us that heroes like Charlie Morgan and Andrew Wilfahrt didn’t die in vain - a somber reminder of the sacrifice so many have paid but so many more go unrecognized.
Today is the day we honor all and prepare to continue our battle for full LGBT equality, for actively serving service members, reservists, national guardsmen, families, and veterans. Today we celebrate the second anniversary of the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and look forward as the sun sets and rises on a new day, rife with new challenges, but with those challenges come opportunities to bring more to the right side of history and full LGBT military equality.
